What is total net income?

Net monthly income

Net income, in other words, is the total money that comes into our current account after deducting some variables that do not represent a real income. In the case of a company, it would be the money that enters the cash box after deducting taxes and other types of expenses. For example, interest.

As we have already indicated, this type of income is the total of the money received minus the associated expenses that reduce our adjusted income. Thus, it is important to know that, unlike gross income, we must deduct the following variables.

For example, if we obtain an income of $1,210 and we have had to apply VAT (21%). This tax, in reality, does not correspond to us. In that case, we are merely intermediaries between the consumer and the Tax Agency.

Ultimately, it is about the income that we actually have. For example, if we have a gross income equivalent to $1,200 and we have 10% withheld in taxes, our net income will be $1,200 minus 10% ($120). That is, $1,080.

Net income of a person

In simplistic terms, net income is the money left over after paying all of a company’s expenses. In practice, this can be very complex in large organizations or endeavors. The accountant must itemize and allocate income and expenses in a manner appropriate to the specific scope of work and context in which the term applies.

Definitions of the term may, however, vary between the UK and the US. In the U.S., net profit is often associated with net income or profit after tax (see table below).

The net profit margin percentage is a related ratio. This figure is calculated by dividing net profit by revenue or turnover, and represents profitability, as a percentage.
