You probably associate the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) with things like the food pyramid, food safety, and plant inspections. However, did you know that USDA is also involved in rural development? USDA believes that helping families in rural areas own their own homes creates strong communities and improves quality of life. To accomplish this goal, it offers its guaranteed single-family home loan program to low- to moderate-income families.

USDA loans are mortgage loans that help make homeownership more affordable for people living in rural areas. The U.S. Department of Agriculture backs USDA loans in the same way that the Department of Veterans Affairs backs VA loans for veterans and their families. This government backing means that, compared to conventional loans, mortgage lenders can offer lower interest rates. If you qualify, you can buy a home without a down payment, although you will still have to pay closing costs.
