Back Rent Assistance

No. Effective September 7, 2021, the Emergency Rental Assistance Program expanded eligibility to include Pinellas County residents who experienced a significant reduction in income or increase in costs during the pandemic, even if their financial hardship was not a result of the pandemic. Previously, the U.S. Treasury required applicants to submit proof of a direct or indirect financial impact of the pandemic.

Pinellas County also has several community partners who offer free assistance to residents who have trouble completing the application due to technical difficulties, lack of access to a computer or the Internet, or difficulty applying in English. Click here for a list of community organizations that are available to assist.

Waivers or exceptions to these documentation requirements may be granted to accommodate disabilities, pandemic-related extenuating circumstances, or lack of technological access.

Due to demand, available funding, and the uncertainty related to when or if additional funding will be available from the federal government, we have made the difficult decision not to accept additional requests for assistance or recertification.

If your application under review includes a request for assistance with future months of rent, please note that, at this time, we are unable to provide future rents beyond January 2022.

** Please note that submission of an application does not guarantee approval for ERAP assistance. All applications are carefully reviewed and must meet eligibility requirements. Applications are also subject to the availability of funds at the time of processing. **

Help to pay rent for covid-19

Although the state claims that it has accelerated the allocation of funds, five and a half months after starting the assistance plan, it closed on Sunday the reception of new applications, because the $2.7 billion in resources is running out.

Words more, words less, the funds will not even cover all the tenants who applied, which is why OTDA announced this weekend the closing of applications for the ERAP program, adding to the rosary of painful mysteries.

“I’ve been waiting for almost five months now, waiting for a response to my application and every time I call, they tell me that everything is on track and that I have to wait. But how much longer do I have to wait? They said they were going to approve cases in six weeks or less. My landlord keeps asking me for his money, and I don’t know what to do,” says a frustrated Alejandra Marín, who complains that acquaintances of hers who filed their applications after her have already received positive responses.

Jennifer Hernandez, a community organizer with Make the Road NY, a group that helped more than 300 members fill out applications for the ERAP rent relief fund, gives credence to the tenants’ complaints of slowness. While she acknowledges that since Gov. Kathy Hochul took office, the processes have moved a little more quickly, only about 10% of the tenants they helped apply since June have received relief.
