The Batuco Lagoon is a natural wetland located in the intermediate depression in central Chile. It is part of a hydrological micro-watershed formally located in the sub-basin of the lower Mapocho River, within the Maipo River basin.

The presence of water in the semi-arid Mediterranean zone of Chile is scarce. In the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, wetlands cover only 0.3% of the surface area. In this context, water is a very precious commodity, both for people, ecosystems and all the life that inhabits them.

That through Resolution 157 of February 12, 2004, the Ministry of Environment, Housing and Territorial Development, adopted measures to guarantee the sustainable use, conservation and management of wetlands in Colombia and developed aspects referred to them in application of Law 357 of 1997;

Article 4 of the aforementioned resolution provides, in relation to the environmental management plan, that the competent environmental authorities must prepare and execute them for the priority wetlands under their jurisdiction, which must be based on a delimitation, characterization and zoning for the definition of management measures, with the participation of the different stakeholders.
