Standards for guardrails
Industrial and construction work always presents a risk for workers. Given the working conditions and the elements handled during the workday, all industrial work requires compliance with safety measures to ensure the welfare of all persons within the work area. Among all these legal requirements, safety handrails play an important role in the prevention of accidents at heights. As it is known, any work at a height of two meters is already considered as a potential risk and requires the implementation of such a safety system.
To learn more about safety railings, CB Metal invites you to read the following article about this element and the ideal height they should have in a work environment.
The Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation presents the National Building Regulations (RNE), through which it presents the minimum height requirements for safety railings in openings to the outside, mezzanines, open sides of stairs, landings, open passages, ramps, balconies, terraces, and windows of buildings, which are higher than 1.00 m above the adjacent ground. These railings must have a minimum height of 0.90 m., measured from the finished interior floor level. If it has a difference over the adjacent floor of 11 meters or more, the height shall be a minimum of 1 meter.
CTE regulations on perimeter handrails The minimum height will be 90 cm, although if the fall exceeds 6 meters and the width of the gap between flights is more than 40 cm, we must install a handrail of more than 1 meter, more specifically, 110 cm.
The closed sides will have a handrail, at a minimum height of 90 centimeters, if the width of the staircase is greater than 1.2 meters; if it is less, but both sides are closed, at least one of the two will have a handrail.
The Technical Building Standards (NTE) establish that the height of the handrails shall not be less than 100 cm for fall heights of less than 25 m, and shall not be less than 110 cm for fall heights greater than that. Guardrails must not incorporate glass or crystal elements.
The height of the handrails shall be at least 80 cm from the floor level, and the gap between the plinth and the handrail shall be protected by a horizontal bar or intermediate rail, or by means of vertical bars, with a maximum spacing of 15 cm.
Height of oguc guardrails
We already know that it is important that the railings comply with the measures that we are advised in the CTE, although it is not mandatory, the documents and headings that make it up are usually based on the Royal Decrees and make many appeals to their paragraphs to the current regulations, becoming a reference document that to avoid problems and get as close as possible to a universal harmonization, it is interesting that we are able to continue complying with them precisely so that each guardrail resembles each other, and each collective protection is not too different, being impossible to know by eye if it complies with the minimums established by the regulations or not.
As we said, it is not the same for railings that are intended to be part of the collective protection of a work area, which may have a separation from the uprights of more than 12 cm.
Remember that the most suitable materials for the construction of railings for the creation of collective protections is precisely aluminum, due to its low weight and that it is much easier to transport as well as to assemble, making the cost of its implementation much cheaper. However, it is also possible to choose other materials such as steel railings or GRP railings.
Balcony railing height
A railing protects us from falls from height, while a handrail serves as a support for safe progress, mainly up and down slopes and stairs, but also in horizontal circulations.
In short, to comply with the regulations, it is sufficient to install handrails or guardrails 95 cm high, or more. The only thing missing is the addition of a second handrail at 70 cm for long ramps (from 1.50 m).
If you are tall, and on a high floor of a building you lean on an exterior parapet 95 cm high, you realize that this handrail is low enough to feel very safe. On the other hand, on an interior staircase, a 95 cm handrail is too high for many people to be comfortable.
