License plates l
If you want to make license plates for your vehicle you can go to a specialized center or buy them online. In either case you will need to present or send documentation, so that they can register who is requesting it, what car it is for and how many plates are made.
You will have to make a new plate for any accessory or trailer that covers the license plate of your car. It is also very common to do this procedure if you want to replace a deteriorated license plate or change the old metal plates for the new acrylic polycarbonate ones.
Of course, you can only make license plates for cars that are already registered. That is to say, the registration and circulation taxes have been paid and the formalities have been carried out at the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT). This is the only way you will have the necessary documentation for this procedure.
If the vehicle you want to register does not have the documentation, we recommend you to take a look at the following article to know the necessary steps for your car to have everything in order:
What is the license plate of a car
The license plate is a combination of alphabetical or numerical characters that identifies and individualizes the vehicle with respect to the others; it is represented on a metal or plastic plate on which the characters are engraved or adhered in an unalterable way.
In most countries, automobiles, as well as other vehicles of a minimum engine displacement, must have one plate with the license plate on the front and another on the rear, although in some places or on some types of vehicles only the rear plate is required.
Exempt from the above format are vehicles of the Diplomatic Corps, Consular Corps, Non-Governmental Organizations, International Mission, Departmental Government and some vehicles of the Police, Armed Forces and Emergency Services.
Some police and fire vehicles have the following format: PNX 123 and the inscription NATIONAL POLICE at the bottom (X referring to the department, e.g.: PNL 456 corresponding to a patrol car).
What is the license plate number of a car?
The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) clearly specifies that the application for a new license plate number is only accepted when the vehicle has an acronym from a province other than the domicile of the interested party. In addition, it is essential to previously request the issuance of a new technical inspection card at an ITV station with a copy of the registration certificate and the old technical data sheet.
On the other hand, if you suffer a theft of the license plate or it is very deteriorated, it is not necessary to go to the Traffic facilities. It is enough to go to a specialized store and ask for a new one. It is obvious that you must provide all the vehicle documents and the vehicle registration certificate. In this case, the license plate will be new but with the same digits and letters as the original one.
World license plates
However, this is only the result of a process that began in 1900 with the so-called provincial numerical system. Its structure was as follows: B-012345, with the letter referring to the province in which the vehicle was registered. It was used for 5.4 million cars, and lasted until 1971, when the alphanumeric provincial system – B-1234-AB – came into force, which allowed up to 262 million combinations.
Unlike those mentioned above, in the case of license plates for trailers, the background color does vary. White gives way to red in this plate to identify trailers and semi-trailers. In terms of structure, it starts with a letter on the left -R- and is followed by a combination of four digits and three letters.
From the red of the license plate for trailers, we move on to blue for Taxis and VTC. This shade has been in force since 2018, when Order PCI/810/2018 was approved in order to put an end to labor intrusiveness in the sector and distinguish professionals more easily. The structure is identical to that of an ordinary license plate, with four digits and three letters.
