Greater Manchester is one of the forty-seven counties of England, United Kingdom. Located in the North West region it is bordered to the north by Lancashire, to the northeast by West Yorkshire, to the southeast by Derbyshire, to the south by Cheshire and to the west by Merseyside.[2][3] It has a population of 2.56 million. It is home to one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United Kingdom and comprises ten metropolitan boroughs: Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan and the cities of Salford and Manchester. It was created on April 1, 1974 as a result of the Local Government Act 1972.[1] The Greater Manchester Urban Area was created on April 1, 1974.

The Greater Manchester Urban Area is the third most populous conurbation in the United Kingdom and spans most of the county’s land area. As a ceremonial county, Greater Manchester has a Lord Lieutenant and a High Sheriff.

The Greater Manchester County Council was abolished in 1986 and its districts (the metropolitan boroughs) are now unitary authority areas. However, the metropolitan county, which covers some 1,285 km² (496 sq mi),[4] continues to exist in terms of law and as a geographical frame of reference.[5] Various county-wide services are coordinated through the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities.
