Free vehicle information by license plate
>When buying a used car, one of the first things to do is to know the history of the vehicle you are interested in. This includes checking that the car has not been deregistered. Here’s why this check is so important and how to find out if a car has been deregistered.
The place to check if my car is deregistered is the DGT’s Document Verification page. You only need to have in your possession a proof of definitive deregistration (obtained when you deliver the vehicle to an authorized scrapyard) and enter the locator that appears on the left side of the page.
On the other hand, if you buy a car and it turns out that it has been deregistered, you will have to take the necessary steps to register it again (with the expense of time and money that this entails). In addition, if the deregistration is definitive, you may not even be able to use the car.
How to know if a vehicle is deregistered can be done by requesting a vehicle report where you can see if it is deregistered and if it is free of all charges. This report can be requested at the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico or on the DGT website, although if you prefer, we can send it to you so that you can get it quickly and easily, including explanatory notes. It will be the fastest and safest way to know if a car is deregistered.
Except for the ‘vehicles in my name’ report, where you need to be the owner of the vehicle or a third party authorized on your behalf to download it, the rest of the reports are available to anyone, whether or not they are the owner of the vehicle.
We recommend that before purchasing the vehicle, you request a complete report of the vehicle in order to verify the existence of liens, seizures, bankruptcy proceedings or any other administrative or judicial charge. It will also provide you with information about the validity of the technical inspection or other technical data, including the repairs and revisions that have been carried out by the workshops attached to our digital maintenance book or workshop book.

How to see the history of a car for free
After closing a sale-purchase transaction, in our country, every vehicle must be registered in the Vehicle Registry of the General Directorate of Traffic (Dirección General de Tráfico). Once the sale is completed, the buyer will have to send the seller a copy of the car’s documentation within 15 days, including a copy of the new vehicle registration certificate stating the change of ownership.
There are different types of reports, which will inform you about different characteristics of the vehicle, besides the ownership. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, trailers, tractors and excavators are the vehicles that can request the vehicle report. You can learn more about this procedure on the following page. Below are the different types of reports and their respective contents:
