Legal translations

Becoming a sworn translator is a step up the legal translation ladder. A sworn translator is one who has obtained the title of Sworn Translator-Interpreter granted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. Without this accreditation, the sworn translator cannot work as such.

As you probably already know, their tasks and services are quite special and require certain specific knowledge. Therefore, so is the process of obtaining the qualification and the knowledge required for it.

At present, the only way to become a sworn translator is through the examination organized by the Office of Interpretation of Languages under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.

Applicants with degrees obtained in foreign countries must be in possession of the corresponding homologation credential or a certificate of equivalence. These certificates are issued by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.

In the United States, in order for a translation to be considered “valid”, many agencies, institutions and courts require, among other requirements, that the translation be certified (i.e., that it be a certified translation).

A certified translation is one that has a certification statement attached to it, drafted and signed by the translator, attesting that the translation is an accurate and complete copy of the original document and that the translator is proficient in the language combination being translated.

I, [name], hereby certify that I am familiar and competent in both the English and Spanish languages, and that the preceding translation is an accurate translation of the original document to the best of my knowledge and belief.

To certify a translation, the translator or translation agency doing the work (if applicable) must attest that the translation is a complete and accurate reflection of the source text. Each page is stamped to this effect and a certificate verifying the translator’s credentials is included along with the original text. Members or Fellows of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) are authorized to use the Institute’s seal to self-certify their translations.

Translation of official documents from Spanish to English

The educational systems of each country differ greatly, so comparing the educational level of each academic degree issued by different countries is complicated and requires specific knowledge to carry out this task. The procedure used to establish such a comparison is the evaluation of foreign academic degrees.

Foreign degree evaluation is the process of determining the U.S. equivalent of degrees completed outside the United States. The process involves a thorough analysis of official foreign academic degrees (diplomas; transcripts, academic credits/hours, grades, etc.) by an expert evaluator. The evaluation process ends with a final determination of equivalency issued on a Foreign Academic Degree Evaluation Report form. Click here for method of operation.

Translation of foreign academic degrees is often thought of as the same as foreign degree evaluation, but they are two separate processes. Translation is the process of generating a text in another language. When evaluated academic degrees are issued in a language other than English, they must be translated into English prior to evaluation.
